International Education Institute:
Enhancing Intercultural Competence in an Educational Setting
Spend two to four weeks enhancing your knowledge and skills as an international educator through one or both of the following courses at Kent State University's Florence Campus.

Florence, Italy - June, 2014

Design and Delivery of Study Abroad: While Studying Abroad (HID 6 / 76595)
June 2 - 13, 2014
(Ideal for students in higher education administration, practicing study abroad professionals, and internationally-focused teachers)

Learn the principles and practices of designing and delivering effective study abroad programs with an intercultural emphasis while studying abroad at Kent State University's historic campus in Florence, Italy.  Participants in this workshop will observe and interact with undergraduate attending the summer school program.  In additional, you will study the principles of developing effective study abroad experiences; meet with university program officials, faculty, facility support staff, as well as private third-party providers of study abroad, community and onsite support services such as legal advisors, health professionals and housing offices.  Ample time will be spent visiting sites of historical and cultural significance in Florence.  A weekend trip to Rome will include meetings with American university programs operating in Italy.  A day of independence program-related travel in Italy is also built into this program.

Intercultural Dimensions of Teaching and Learning (C & I 6 / 77005)
June 16 - 27, 2014
(Ideal for educators at all levels who want to better understand the global classroom and teachers in intercultural or international contexts guiding students to develop a global mindset)

Educators at all levels are being called upon to develop an international and intercultural dimension in their schools, curriculum, and communities.  This course addresses teaching and learning in an international and intercultural context, considering issues especially relevant in K-16 education.  Participants in this course will enhance their understanding of how principles from he fields of cross cultural psychology and intercultural communication influences the teaching and learning process.  Participants will assess their own intercultural competence and explore curricular initiative design to enhance global understanding.  We will visit local Italian and international schools and universities, take a weekend trip to the educational center at Reggio Emilia, and have ample time to visit sites of local historical and cultural Significance.

Program coordinator and instructor: Dr. Kenneth Cushner is a professor of Multicultural and International Education in the College and Graduate School of Education, Health and Human Services at Kent State University.  Dr. Cushner is author or editor of several books and articles in the field of intercultural education and training.  A former East-West Center scholar, Dr. Cushner is a founding Fellow and past-president of the International Academy for Intercultural Research, was a Fulbright Scholar to Sweden in 2008, coordinated the Teachers at Sea Program (summers of 2010 and 2011), and currently serves as director of COST - the Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching.
